The Principal of the E.P College of Education at Amedzofe, in the Ho West district, Reverend Sylvanus K. Tettey has expressed surprise over his suspension for allowing the use of the school’s bus to cart firewood.
Rev. Tettey was on Monday handed a 3-month suspension without pay by the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), after he was hauled to the Education ministry last week to give reasons for transporting firewood with the new 33-seater Eicher bus given to the school by government last year.
Social media was awash in the past weeks with pictures of the GV 158-16 registered bus fully loaded with firewood meant for use at the school’s kitchen.
This got many Ghanaians questioning the discretion of the school authorities to sanction such a misuse of the bus, prompting officials of the Education ministry to crack the whip.
However, reacting to his suspension, Rev. Tettey said it was news to him as he was never communicated to about the sanctions, though he explained circumstances for the use of the bus in such manner to officials of the ministry.
He said in a radio interview that, the bus was improvised after the school’s truck which carts the firewood broke down in a forest.
Adding that, it was the only available option to get firewood to the kitchen for meals to be prepared for the over thousand students of the college.
Rev. Tettey also indicated that, he never regretted such a decision, since was it was meant for the good of the students and not for his personal gain.
