Teachers to picket tomorrow over salary arrears

A group of teachers calling themselves Victims of Salary Arrears have vowed to picket the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, 8 August 2018, if government fails to settle their five to eight months’ salary arrears.

A group of teachers calling themselves Victims of Salary Arrears have vowed to picket the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, 8 August 2018, if government fails to settle their five to eight months’ salary arrears.

The aggrieved teachers say all previous efforts to have government pay them their arrears have proven futile hence their decision to besiege the ministry.

“We are going to picket the ministry. We deem it fit to exercise our right to go there and fight for our cause; that is basically why we are doing it. If we do not get our money, well, what we will be doing, I don’t want to say will be ‘annoying’ but it is still part of our constitutional right. The salaries of teachers are not even enough for what they (government officials) receive as sitting allowances,” Convener for the group, David Kwaku Xefu stated, on Monday, 6 August 2018.

Earlier this year, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) went on strike over the non-payment of their salary arrears.

They however called it off after government commenced processes to pay up all arrears.
